Teeth Grinding

Your body responds to stress in multiple ways: ulcers, backaches, sleep insomnia and even upset stomachs. Did you know that stress also results in jaw pain? Temporal Mandibular Disorder (TMD) involves damage to the temporal mandibular joint, or TMJ. This joint acts as the hinge for your lower jaw.

Although causes vary, studies found two common factors in TMD: (1) the presence of stress, and (2) parafunctional habits. Parafunctional habits are a fancy way of saying grinding or clenching your teeth. Other habits include nail biting, pen or pencil chewing. TMD results include morning headaches, tired jaw muscles, painful chewing, and even jaw dislocation.

TMD can cause more than mere jaw pain. It can also cause teeth to shift position, or gum and bone crumbling. Many people grind their teeth at night while asleep, completely unaware of their habit. When they finally complain about jaw pain and morning headaches, they become aware of the grinding and the ensuing TMD.
