Gingivitis Naturally occurring bacteria in the mouth forms a sticky film coating the teeth called plaque. The developing toxins in the plaque cause gum irritation, or gingivitis. Symptoms include red, swollen gums that bleed easily. Without treatment, gingivitis causes periodontis. At this stage, the gums, bone, and mouth may suffer permanent damage. Severe damage includes tooth loss and painful blisters. Your best protection against gingivitis and periodontis is good oral hygiene. At a minimum, you should brush and floss twice a day. Regular dental check-ups and early detection will avoid permanent damage. To keep you safe and healthy, gingivitis and periodontitis searches are part of our routine checkup. We measure the distance between the tooth and the surrounding gum, ensuring your health. Normal space is three millimeters or less. When periodontal disease is present, the space between the tooth and gum widens creating "pockets.” Plaque then collects in these pockets, which leads to more toxins, deeper pockets, and possibly tooth loss.
